"Another criminal was the camp Kapo Christian Knoll of Nuremberg. In his narrow-minded boasting he named himself "the hangman of Natzweiler." On the ledger of this inhuman creature must be placed among others the painful death of a young Russian who, along with some other comrades, attempted escape. Unfortunately, he was caught and beaten to death on roll call square before the eyes of all the prisoners. From Mueller and Knoll he received no fewer than 154 lashes with the whip on the naked buttocks. The tortured prisoner had long since lost consciousness, yet the beasts continued to beat him." (Hackett, David A, translator, ed, "The Buchenwald Report," Oxford, Westview Press, 1995. p. 373)
