"Mauthausen contained stone and granite quarries, called the `weinergraben,'
belonging to the municipality of Vienna, and useful for paving its streets.
The prisoners, weakened by disentery, their food described as `powdered
manure,' were whipped up the 148 steps of the quarry in freezing weather,
bearing heavy slabs of granite. If a prisoner stumbled under the weight of
the load, beatings followed immediately. Sometimes a victim unwittingly,
but perhaps mercifully, killed a fellow sufferer when he was unable to keep
a firm hold on the stone that crashed on someone below him. Three weeks was
the normal span of survival. Many of the victims, driven to desperation by
their hopeless ordeal, ended their agony by jumping to their deaths from
the top of the quarry. The guards referred to these as `the parachutists'
and were vexed by their action since the spattered flesh and blood spoiled
the neatness of the steps.

"In the last months of the war forty-seven downed American pilots had been
imprisoned in Mauthausen. they were among those who were compelled,
barefooted, to make the climb. Men who reached the top were marched back
and given heavier loads. By morning all were dead. The supervision of the
quarry enterprise fell to a homosexual sadist, the notorious `Blond
Fraulein' -- so named by his comrades. He boasted of hacking to death a
contigent of eighty-seven Dutch Jews over a period of a few days while they
were digging into the sides of the quarry. <14>"
