                       SOUTH CAROLINA

In the early months of 1995, the South Carolina
Civilian Militia began actively recruiting in the Greenville-
Spartanburg area, seeking, in particular, pilots and those
with military skills. The militia's self-proclaimed leader,
Ian Roebuck, a preacher, claims 80 members in several
counties. Roebuck and "information officer" R. C. Davenport
disclaim any ties with white supremacist organizations, but
advance the notion, standard in the militia movement. that
the United States is on course to succumb to a United
Nations-led tyranny.
