ADVERTISEMENT SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ACCEPTED, PUBLISHED
editorial by John-Paul Checkett, Assistant Faculty/Counseling Center

I was surprised and saddened to open the Oct. 15 edition of
The State News and discover a paid advertisement for CODOH, a
Holocaust revisionist group. ["A Revisionist's View of the U.S.
Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C." by the Committe for Open
Debate On the Holocaust - CODOH]
While I certainly will not question your right to print the
advertisement, I believe this incident raises some disturbing
questions regarding your editorial judgement. By printing such an
advertisement, you are stating in no uncertain terms that you are
willing to disseminate hate literature for a price. It angers me to
consider not only the possibility that there is actually a market for
the CODOH's anti-Semitic diatribes on this campus, but also the
implication that, in your judgement, it would somehow benifit this
campus for The State News to serve as a clearinghouse for hate groups.
Although newspapers that are willing to help such groups in return for
financial gain certainly may have the right to exist, such a
periodical is not one that I would care to be associated with, and I
assume others on campus share this opinion.
Surely one cannot argue that providing CODOH with a forum to
present its views without opposing comment or debate is equivalent to
presentin a news story exposing the prevalence of bigotry in our
society. Thus, I would like to know the editorial policy concerning
such matters. Are you open to full-page advertisements promoting the
Ku Klux Klan? The Aryan Nation? Groups advocating pedophilia? I
would also like to know how comfortable The State News feels acepting
money from such organizations.
