First, Pat Buchanan is a paleo-conservative whose traditional Catholic
roots determine his political outlook and his sense of morality. Like
at least 99% of White Americans, he does not seem to understand the
primacy of Race in the "culture war" he talks about.

He is, however, clearly a White Man...and an unusually courageous one
at that.

I first noticed Buchanan in 1982, when he described the black
riots in Washington, D.C. which followed an aborted Klan demonstration
I had originally organized. The march was eventually cancelled after I
was ordered to report to a Mexican-dominated prison in Texas, rather
than lead a demonstration in opposition to illegal Mexican immigration
in the nation's capital. The real story, though, was the aftermath,
which the national media portrayed as righteous indignation to Klan
"hatred." In his syndicated newspaper column, Buchanan told the truth,
"When it comes to hatred, to violence, to racism, the Knights of the
KKK can't hold a candle to the thuggish and criminal elements in the
black community in Washington, D.C." Interesting...I thought.

After that, his columns and his comments on CNN's Crossfire become a
refreshing alternative to the "mainstream" media's usual drivel. He
railed against "affirmative action" and other anti-White programs long
before it was fashionable to do so. He decried the pernicious affects
of Third World immigration on the city and the country where he grew
up. Against his fellow conservatives' multi-nationalism and
interventionism, he stood up for an America First foreign policy. He
called Capitol Hill "Israeli occupied territory." When opinion polls
were giving George Bush a ninety percent approval rating for his
planned intervention in the Persian Gulf, Buchanan wrote, "There are
only two groups beating the drums for war in the Middle East--the
Israeli Defense Ministry and its amen corner in the U.S." And then, in
a comment that Jews seem particularly sensitive to, he said the war
would be fought by "kids with names like McAllister, Murphy, Gonzales
and Leroy Brown."

In 1987 he spoke out against the impending deportation of Karl Linnas
to the U.S.S.R., whom the Soviets had accused of "Nazi war crimes" in
Estonia. He lost that battle. Linnas was deported by the U.S. and
summarily executed by the Soviets. He then became the champion of
retired Cleveland auto worker John Demjanjuk, whom Israel was accusing
of "war crimes." Demjanjuk was extradited to Israel and, after a show
trial held in a movie theater, sentenced to hang. Buchanan was
vindicated this time, though, when the Israeli Supreme Court was forced
to release Demjanjuk when new evidence was released by the Russians
after the collapse of the U.S.S.R.

These are certainly not the publicly expressed opinions of a wimpy
White sellout. Shortly before the Persian Gulf War, for instance, I was
leading anti-war demonstrations here in "New Yoik with Palm Trees." I've
never been used to winning popularity contests, but those days looked
the bleakest. Jews *and* rednecks were calling in death threats.

So the fact remains that, despite whatever ideological differences we
may have with Buchanan, and despite his attempts to distance himself
from openly professed "racists," he is the first serious presidential
alternative we've seen since Huey Long.

Long also downplayed racial issues, in an era when most Whites
understood racial differences. He also denounced the politically
powerful Klan, a savvy political tactic considering Louisiana's large
Catholic electorate and the Klan's history of anti-Catholicism. But had
he not been assassinated by a Jewish doctor, he would likely have
defeated Roosevelt in 1936. And along with his friends and
allies--Gerald L.K. Smith, Father Coughlin, and Charles Lindberg--he
would have kept America out of WWII and changed he history of the
world. HE was a White Man. So is Buchanan. --Don
