Sir:

In April 22-28 issue, Monday Magazine published a retraction of an article in 1993, "How Hate Spreads," which falsely stated that I was "formerly involved with the Alberta Chapter of Aryan Nations." I have never been involved with that or any other similar organization in any capacity, as Monday Magazine concluded after a thorough investigation. In fact, I have been proactive in trying to expose racistism and bigotry in Canada, and to this end have worked with other writers and academics such as Stanley Barrett (Is God a Racist?) and Warren Kinsella (Web of Hate).

In accordance with Canadian criminal defamation law, Monday published a retraction that gave front page play to my exoneration, called "The Trials of Gary Botting: The thin line between the crusading lawyer and his client" (April 22-28 1993, Vol. 19, No. 17, pp. 1, 6-7). The essence of the retraction was stated by Monday Magazine on p. 7 as follows:

"In a recent article on far-right groups, Monday stated that Botting was formerly involved with the Alberta chapter of Aryan Nations (a white supremacist group founded by the poisonously racist Long). We believed our information on his associations with Long and others justified this comment. Further research reveals no proof of his involvement in Aryan Nations, so we retract this comment and apologize for it." The "association" with Long alluded to was my accompanying Stan Barrett to Long's compound in order to write an expose about him in Is God a Racist?

By republishing the false information in part of the Nizkor Project, you are perpetuating the defamation, especially since anyone who does a search of my name on any of the major search engines comes up with this misinformation, which is certainly damaging to me as a lawyer and civil libertarian, as well as a writer. I would ask you to delete the sentence containing the false information about me from your website as soon as possible. Otherwise I shall be forced to take legal action.

Don't get me wrong. I very much support what you are doing. But I must insist that you delete this poisonous and deleterious sentence from the article, in accordance with the spirit of the original retraction.

Sincerely,

Gary Botting
