Here are some more Giwer lies.  I wrote, in response to someone else,
that our system at nizkor.almanac.bc.ca was purchased in 1995 (1994?),
when -- and I chose my words carefully -- "when 486s weren't _quite_ so
cheap as now."

As I wrote those words, I pictured what Giwer or Moran or someone who
wasn't choosy about the truth would do with them.  I made sure to
emphasize that I wasn't claiming 486s were expensive.  I was careful to
state it in such a way that no one would think I was saying they weren't
cheap.  I added underlining so my point wouldn't be missed.

True to form, Giwer misquoted me anyway.  Twice that I've found so far.

In this first article, he asks rhetorically "486s weren't cheap?" and
"who ripped you off?"  He states that we paid "outrageous prices."

In the second, he's claiming "they think a 486DX25 was expensive."

More lies.  So what else is new?

What makes this all the more amusing is the fact that the 486
was donated - and that this fact had been published on the net
at the time, and that this fact appears in some of the press
reports of the period. I love watching these folks dig
themselves into deep holes like this :-)

Ah -- significantly more than that, actually.  UnixWare alone set us
back about $1000, I think.  And we got it over a year ago, when 486s
weren't _quite_ so cheap as now.  We spent somewhat into five digits for
the current setup.

But, excepting the bandwidth, it's not a bad setup.  :-)

We're serving 700+ _people_ per day.  Average access per person is
running about 4.5 pages, so roughly 3000 pages/day.  Factor in non-HTML
hits (home page GIFs, mostly) and all the other traffic we don't count
(robots, webmasters) and we're well over 4000 hits/day.  And that's not
counting the FTP site!  All in all we're shoving roughly a gig a month
out that modem.  We're way beyond optimal performance;  we're into
"creaking under the strain" performance.

Never fear, though.   Matt Giwer and Ron Schoedel alerted us (snort) to
the fact that we have a bandwidth problem.  Thanks to their eagle eyes,
we've decided to do something about it.  Don't worry, we'll figure out
something.

        A year ago 486s weren't cheap?  Who ripped you off?  A year ago it was
hard to find a 25 anything but used.  As for UnixWare, Linux works just
fine.  The CD-ROM release runs about $50.

        I imagine anyone who paid the outrageous prices you did would not know
instinctively that there was a bandwidth problem.
