Penguin Books & Deborah Lipstadt, one often found that there was considerable difference between the Gospel According to Irving and reality - as a reading of the transcripts compared to his website "diary" frequently revealed. It will probably come as no surprise that Irving is continuing this pattern he has established. D.D. Guttenplan's book, _The Holocaust on Trial History, Justice and the David Irving Libel Case_ is now available from the UK. According to Irving, one his fan club had reported: Page 163: The Lipstadt defence had somehow assembled a team consisting of five non-Jews. After the trial; Richard Evans . . . said this had been deliberate. Guttenplan adds a footnote effectively calling Evans a liar: "Evans made this observation at a public forum on the trial sponsored by the Wiener Library in London. The next morning I received a telephone call from Anthony Julius, who also spoke. . . Julius assured me that Evans was mistaken."http://www.fpp.co.uk/Online/01/03/GuttenplanBk.html Now here's what Guttenplan *really* wrote:Only an anti-Semite would argue that a Jew is somehow less qualified to give expert evidence on the Holocaust - or less capable of reporting to the court in the unprejudiced manner the law requires of expert witnesses - than a non-Jew. Yet it has been widely remarked that, in a field where most of the prominent scholars are Jews [...] the defense had somehow assembled a team consisting of two Germans, a Dutchman, a Welshman, and an American Protestant. After the trial Richard Evans, the Cambridge professor who co-ordinated expert testimony for the defense, said this had been deliberate: "We didn't want to feed [Irving]'s anti-Semitic paranoia."In the footnote Guttenplan does not call Evans "a liar" - effectively or otherwise:Evans made this observation at a public forum on the trial sponsored by the Wiener Library in London. The next morning I received a telephone call from Anthony Julius, who also spoke. Declaring his indifference to Irving's state of mind, Julius assured me that Evans was mistaken. And, indeed, Evans was mistaken: one member of the team also happens to be Jewish. hro ===================== Hilary Ostrov E-mail: hostrov@telus.net WWW: http://www3.telus.net/myssiwyg/ The Nizkor Project http://www.nizkor.org/
