Perhaps Amherst promotes civility. As regards credibility, I am reminded very much of the opening scenes in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Paul Newman and a malevolent giant (Ted ?) are about to fight with Bowie knives. Newman suggests that they go over the rules first, and his astonished opponent replies, "Rules!? In a knife fight???" It is with that same degree of incredulity that I respond to you by saying, "Credibility!? In a name-calling contest???" The use of the term credibility presupposes a concern for truth and facts. That simply does not exist here. This forum consists of competing cliques and free-lance loners each pushing their own version of the truth with a near paranoid aversion to considering anything that might contradict same. I would also suggest that there is a significant difference in the onerous index of the two statements you compare. If someone says to me, "Well, you're just a xxxx", filling in that blank with any ethnic/gender/racial word whicha applies to me, I'd look at it as a laughably lame attempt at insult. I am obviously not insulted by what I am (hope that's obvious), and so could only take offense at the use of the word "just", but that would be stretching myself to take offense at something deicedly less than lukewarm. On the other hand, "You're sub-human anyway so fuck you" carries a significant potential for offense at any time in any culture with any person. Aside from degree, I tend to poke at those who do this sort of thing constantly, and those who instigate it or use it as a regular conversational tool (or more correctly, as a tool to derail conversation). This is what has produced what you perceive as a philosophical polarization. Sorry I missed the Benjamin Johnson post to you, but even when my visits were frequent I never read more than 5% or 10% of the posts. My "code of eternal love" I presume refers to the ancient Buddhist sentiment I put in the quote box some time ago. It doesn't show when I read and send messages and I tend to forget it's there until it rankles someone and reminds me of the perversity of human nature which can find something disgusting in a statement that simple and that good. Ah well, it keeps things interesting, doesn't it? ----------------------------------------------------------- "For hatred does not cease by hatred at any time: hatred ceases by love-this is the eternal law." - The Pali Canon 1:5 From dbtgthomas@aol.com Sun May 28 10:01:41 PDT 1995 Article: 21626 of alt.revisionism Path: news.port.island.net!news.island.net!news.bc.net!torn!howland.reston.ans.net!news-e1a.megaweb.com!newstf01.news.aol.com!newsbf02.news.aol.com!not-for-mail From: dbtgthomas@aol.com (DbtgThomas) Newsgroups: alt.revisionism Subject: Re: soap and corpses Date: 26 May 1995 15:47:42 -0400 Organization: America Online, Inc.
