When Russia was dissipating the might of the German war machine with the blood of her people, there was only one front, the Eastern. Stalin and company desperately urged the Allies to open what was quite naturally referred to as a second front, in Europe. Because it got a lot more press, many people erroneously believe that the Normandy invasion established the second front, when in fact, as another poster has noted, that distinction belongs to the Italian campaign. Suppose Normandy technically could be called a third front, but never heard it referred to that way. You are correct in one thing, however. This is simple military history.
