======== Quote Cliff Swiger =============

Hi Matt:

And this from the Jew, Kurt Tucholsky, on the German people:

"May the gas creep into the play-rooms of your children.
They should drop dead slowly, the little dolls. I'd
like to see the wife of the churchwarden and the
editor-in-chief and the mother of the sculptor and
the sister of the banker die a bitter, excruciating
death, all of them, together."

Die Weltbuhne,XXIII,Nr.30 (July 30,1927), pp. 152f

=========== End Swiger =================

Tucholsky is a very good writer, and I don't dare to translate him into a
language which isn't my first language. The part I've done below is ok, but for
a complete translation (it's not long) I'd rather mail the original and let it
do a native speaker; or you may look it up in the English edition.

The title is "Da"nische Felder" (Danish Fields)

Basically, Tucholsky says in this short piece: If you don't see that the next
war is coming, once again waged by still the same culprits, THEN you and your
children deserve the death they'll bring you.

This is what follows immediately after Swiger's quote:

[they shall die an]

     "... excruciating death, all of them, together.
     "Because they want it without wanting it. Because
     they are lazy in their hearts. Because they do not
     hear and do not see and do not feel. Alas, always
     the wrong ones are hit.

     Blessed should be he who deserts his fatherland
     in this hour. He may live his finest hours in
     a Danish landscape.

              [End of text]

Use this on a.r. if you want to.
It's a shame what Swiger does to this wonderful German author.
