"The following letter was written by the Metropolitan
(Archbishop) of the Greek Catholic Church of the Ukraine,
Andrey Sheptytsky, to Adolf Hitler. The occasion was the
fall of the city of Kiev to German troops in August 1941:

His Excellency the Fuehrer
of the Great German Empire,
Adolf Hitler,
Reichschancellory, Berlin

Your Excellency,

As head of the Ukrainian Catholic Church, I send
your Excellency my warmest congratulations as
regards the occupation of the capital of the
Ukraine, the golden domed city of Dnieper - Kiev.
In your person, we see the invincible leader of
the incomparable and glorious German Army. The aim
of destroying and rooting out Bolshevism which
you, as Fuehrer of the Great German Reich, have
made the target of this campaign, wins your
Excellency the gratitude of all the Christian
world. The Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church knows
the historic meaning of the tremendous progress of
the German nations under your guidance. I will
pray to God to put his blessing upon the victory
which shall be the guarantee of enduring peace for
Your Excellency, the German Army and the German
nation.

                              Very respectfully yours,
                              Count Andrey Sheptytsky,
                              Metropolitan*
