Arts and KZ Gusen

Extermination of Intellectuals

From the start, KZ Gusen was used to exterminate those who offended the Nazi-Party. Many thousands of intellectuals from all over Europe were deported to this camp early in the war to die by the cruelties and heavy work-load.

Keeping Human Dignity with Arts

For many highly educated people (politicians, artists, priests, resistance fighters, prisoners of war), producing artwork was one of the few ways to maintain a semblance of human dignity within this Hell of Hells.

Artwork is Monuments

Many of these people did not survive KZ Gusen. Only their artwork remains. Therefore, we consider this focus on their lives and work a commemorative monument within this KZ Mauthausen-Gusen Information Pages.
