KZ Gusen I, II & III Commemoration

50th Anniversiary of the Liberation
Some 4000 people from all around the world gathered at the sports-field
of Laangenstein, Austria to commemorate the 40.000 victims of the former
KZ Gusen I, II & III concentration camp complex. Even the Federal President
of the Republic of Austria, Dr. Thomas Klestil,
and Pope John Paul II. sent addresses to commemorate the tens of thousands
KZ Gusen victims.
On May 8, 1995 a commemorative service in the Parish-Church of St.Georgen/Gusen
was also dedicated to the huge number of KZ Gusen I, II & III victims in the
area.
Furthermore the follownig speakers gave commemorative addresses along with this
first local-international commemoration for the KZ Gusen victims:
- The President of Amicale Belge de Mauthausen, Mr. Paul Brusson (KZ Gusen survivor)
- The President of Amicale Francaise de Mauthausen, Genreal Pierre Saint-Macary
- The President of "Concours National de la Resistance" , Mr. Jean Gavard (KZ Gusen survivor)
- The President of Klub Mauthausen-Gusen Warszawa, Mr. Stanislaw Koprowski (KZ Gusen survivor)
- The President of Assoziatione Nazionale dei Ex-Deportati nei Campi Nazisti (ANED), Mr. Gianfranco Maris (KZ Gusen survivor)
- The Ambassador of France to Austria, Mr. Andre Lewin
- Mr. Juan de Diego on behalf of the Spanish victims
- Mr. Leander Hens on behalf of the Liberators (41 Recon Squad 11th Ard Div 3rd US Army)
- Landeshauptmann-Stellvertreter Fritz Hochmayer on behalf of the Provice of Upper Austria
- Rtd. Ambassador Louis Deble (Amicale Francaise de Mauthausen) for Dr. Johannes Gruber
- Vice-Mayor Ernst Hutsteiner on behalf of the local communites of Langenstein, Luftenberg and St.Georgen/Gusen
Along with this commemoration
- a commerorative plate dedicated
to Marcel Callo (a KZ Gusen II victim that represents thousands of other forgotten victims)
and Dr. Johannes Gruber (a KZ Gusen I victim that saved the lives of many others in this camp) and
- a map of the KL Gusen I & II complex
were given to the KZ Gusen Memorial.
