KZ Gusen I, II & III Commemoration

Austria´s Federal Minister of the Interior commemorates for the first time
Mr. Karl Schloegl, Federal Minister of the Interior of the Republic
of Austria participates in the commemoration for the first time in
history on behalf of the Austrian Federal Government at the KZ Gusen I, II & III
Memorial in Langenstein, Austria together with 4,000 people from
all around the world.
So, this 4th Local-International Commemoration marks one further important
step to reintegrate the more than 40,000 forgotten victims of the KZ Gusen I, II & III complex
back into official history and the public consciousness of the people of Austria.
Special commemorational addresses were given in the presence of:
- the Vice-President of the International Mauthausen Commitee, Signor Italo Tibaldi
- the President of the International Gusen Comittee, M. Pierre Serge Choumoff, France
- the President of the Russian Mauthausen Society, Mr. Fedor Stepanovich Solodovnik
- the President of Klub Mauthausen-GUSEN, Warszawa, Mr. Stanislaw Koprowski
- the President of ANED-Sezione di Empoli, Mr. Nedo Nencioni
- the Chief of the Sesto San Giovanni City Council (Milano, Italy), Signor Giancarlo Castelli
- the Representative of the Polish Embassy in Austria, Botschaftsrat Mag. Wojciech Wieckowski
- the Representatives of the Ukrainian Embassy in Austria, Botschaftsrat Nicola Bodjatyrow and deputy military attaché Wladmir Popo
- the Representative of the Republic of Austria, Sektionschef Dr. Wolf Szymanski (Austrian Federal Ministry of the Interior)
- the Representative of the Upper Austrian Provincial Council, Landtagsabgeordneter Guenther Truebswasser
- the Mayor of St.Georgen/Gusen, Buergermeister Rudolf Honeder (where the KZ Gusen II Tunnels are)
- the Mayor of Langenstein, Buergermeister Ernst Hutsteiner (where the KZ Gusen I & II Camps were)
by:
- the Austrian Federal Minister of the Interior, Mag. Karl Schloegl
- the historian of the Mauthausen-Memorial Museum, Hofrat Hans Marsalek (who wrote the basic history-books about the Mauthausen and Gusen concentration camps)
- the President of Amicale Belge de Mauthausen, M. Paul Brusson (who was an inmate of KZ Gusen I saved by Dr. Johannes (Papa) Gruber)
- the Representative of the Klub Mauthausen-Gusen (Poznan), Ing. Jerzy Kowalzyk (who documented the inmates of the KZ Gusen (KELLERBAU) tunnels)
- the teacher of the 8th grade class BEULAH High School, Alabama, Miss Jan-Ruth White (who helped to re-edit these info-pages into more standard English)
Furthermore:
- a commemoration plaque made of red clay from Alabama was given by
Miss Jan-Ruth White on behalf of the 8th grade class of BEULAH HIGH SCHOOL,
Alabama to Minister Karl Schloegl to be mounted at the KZ Gusen Memorial wall later on.
Along with this local-international commemoration
the local population also organized:
- a commemorative run by students of the local schools at
Mauthausen, St.Georgen/Gusen and Luftenberg, Austria
to bring the giant dimension of the former KZ Gusen camps to the minds
of the people (organized by Dr. Andreas Dibold and the teachers of the participating schools).
- a lecture and round-table discussion by suvivors of the KZ Mauthausen and KZ Gusen camps led by Hofrat Hans Marsalek (Langenstein Parish Center)
- a round-table discussion with Former Stone-Workers at Gusen led by Dr. Christoph Freudenthler (Gasthaus FLOH, Gusen)
- a workshop dedicated to the rehabilitation of Dr. Johannes (Papa) Gruber, led by Martha Gammer (at Langenstein Parish Center)
This local-international commemoration was supported and made possible by:
