TWINNING AGREEMENT
Empoli - St.Georgen/Gusen

The Municipalities of Empoli and St.Georgen an der Gusen declare their will to establish a sound cooperation with the purpose to help mutual knowledge and the creation of friendly relationship between the people of the two towns, by means of exchanging knowledge, experiences and initiative.

This cooperation, which originates from the two municipalities' will to commit themselves to maintain alive, among the rising generation, memory and consciousness of the tragic and cruel events perpetrated by the nazi-fascist regime, has the purpose of helping to form a spirit of European citizenship democracy, tolerance and human solidarity.

The towns of St. Georgen/Gusen and Empoli undersign this twinning agreement as a concrete engagement to promote a political action aimed to the achievement of peace and ideals of friendship and solidarity all over the world.

They have the purpose to support any initiative useful to spread knowledge of what happened in the Mauthausen-Gusen concentration camps and, on the whole, the historical events which led nazist regime to the choice of deportation. They engage themselves to promote mutual understanding among Italian and Austrian people, to increase cultural exchange and maintain permanent links between the two municipalities. Finally, they commit themselves to exploit initiatives of associations, groups and individuals, which have helped in the past and help today, with their action, the development of peaceful living together among people of different education, training and ideals.

The present twinning agreement is undersigned on the 8th day in the month of March, of the year 1997, in the City of Empoli, drawn up in two copies using both the Italian and German language and bearing witness.

The Mayor of Sankt Georgen an der Gusen, Rudolf Honeder
